Whaterver the term the practice remains remarkably consistent across diverse cultures and time periods that have partaken of the Christian faith.It used to be that families gathered in home churches in the very early Church. Church services were more congregational, less formal and fully involving of the members of the Church, usually in a home.As time wore on, people gathered into Churches with a head priest and therefore the priest began doing all the Christenings. He performed baptisms on children too. Because ceremonies were public, infant Christenings started happening more frequently.The practice really took hold after the 2nd and 3rd century A.D.
